SALARY????? WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT
Last week I received a pesky call
from one of the premier bank offering credit card with lowest EMI option, with
much discussion and concentration and the lucrative benefits that they were
offering I could not refrain myself coveting for the same. Everything came to a
halt when they ask about SALARY? The question was obvious but the answer was
absurd; I have no salary account; I receive check or sometime in cash and the
meeting terminated with a sorry note.
I could not correlate both the
things; may be some abstruse logic goes behind it. I tried to dig out the
secret of being a SALARIED PERSON. What is salary and why it is so important?
Way back in 13th
century the allowance is paid to the soldiers to purchase salt is known as salt
money; as it was difficult to obtain and was a high value trade it was also
considered a form of currency. And the etymology goes on and transformed Anglo-French
word salarie to salary. However now a days salt is not a high value trade but
the term salary (salt money) has suffused its important all over the world.
The importance of being a
salaried person varies from person to person; famous writer Robert Kyoski
believes that working for someone with a meager salary would not you get anywhere.
Whereas Bill
Vaughn says that getting a high salary means your career is at a
culmination stage. However when I read in some news paper that some of
personnel of top notch companies receives mere a penny as their yearly package
the relevance of both the statement seems irrelevant. And undoubtly; I stranded
to question myself as why such ambiguity prevails. Remembering the days; when
in 1903, Henry Ford founded FORD MOTOR CORP and offered salary higher than the
market rate; industry expert named him lunatic but in no time ford had the best
employees to work for and the world knows that it is Europe’s no. one car. Similarly
some companies do it to be tagged as best companies to work for and they pay
higher salary comparative to the market rate to be listed in fortune 500
companies. Barring Google’s top three executive who receive only a dollar as
their yearly pay check. The reason might seem obvious that company take cares
of its employee so they don’t require money to spend for. On the contrary; few
companies offer great paycheck but the uncertainty or prolonging the pay date
is inevitable; few believes that it’s part of their retention strategy where as
few believes it as the reason of bad management. The biggest ironies of these
employees are; they are impractically unfit and that cause them rejection in
every other company that might cause instability or changing the mind set of
rest of the employees. In the year 2009, when Ramligam Raju, chairman of Satyam
computer was alleged of forging and falsifying the books of account and it was
named as corporate scandal, thousands of its employee cursed their fate and in
no time the market was flooded with resumes of Satyam employees but they had no
job.
And once again I could
not stop myself appreciating Robert Kyoski’s view “Workers work hard enough to not be fired, and owners pay just
enough so that workers won't quit.”
To be continued…..
